A beautiful large medallion of Geta from Pergamum
Lot 1438
MYSIA. Pergamum. Geta, 209-211. Medallion (Orichalcum, 46 mm, 49.35 g, 7 h), Menogenes the Younger, strategos. AYTOKPA•KAI•ΠΟΠΛIOC•CЄΠTI•ΓЄTAC• Laureate and cuirassed bust of Geta to right, breastplate decorated with a gorgoneion. Rev. ЄΠI CTP MHNOΓЄNOYC B NЄOY•ΠЄPΓAMH/NΩN / B•NЄOKOP/ΩN Geta on horseback to right, preparing to spear Parthian lying on the ground, raising his right hand to protect himself; below horse, oval shield. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG Paris 2217 (same dies, but heavily tooled and misattributed to Caracalla). SNG von Aulock -. Very rare. A beautiful and very large medallion. Very minor doubling, otherwise, good very fine.

This example differs from lot 1437 above in that it shows the Parthian below the horse's forelegs lying on the ground and raising his right hand to protect himself from the spear of the charging emperor, a much more resigning posture than that of the fleeing Parthian on the other medallion
